Chico Hamilton El Chico Verve Vault LP

Chico Hamilton’s El Chico is set for a single-LP reissue as part of the Verve Vault Series. The 1966 album brought bossa nova influences into the drummer and bandleader’s music alongside avant-garde elements.

Hamilton had already worked as a sideman with Count Basie, Lester Young, and Lena Horne before establishing himself as a bandleader. On El Chico, he responded to the growing interest in bossa nova by incorporating its sound into an ensemble with an expanded percussion section. The recording reflects a period of stylistic exploration, with rhythm playing a central role in the group’s approach.

The lineup features Jimmy Cheatham on trombone, Sadao Watanabe on alto saxophone, Gábor Szabó on guitar, and Albert Stinson on bass. Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja join Hamilton on percussion, adding further layers to the ensemble’s rhythmic foundation. That combination places brass, saxophone, and guitar alongside the contributions of three percussionists.

The repertoire pairs original compositions with interpretations of outside material. “El Moors” and “Helena” appear alongside the group-written “Conquistadores,” while selections including “People,” associated with Barbra Streisand, “This Dream,” and “Marcheta” broaden the program. Together, the selections document Hamilton’s interest in bringing different musical influences into his group’s work.
