Editorial Standards
Purpose of the catalogue
BEQRA Public Domain Literature Library provides free access to carefully selected public-domain works, accompanied by editorial notes that support a first reading. The catalogue aims to make older texts more approachable by offering contextual guidance without overwhelming the reader.
Scope and selection
The library currently contains 91 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Titles were chosen for their literary merit, historical interest, and representation of diverse authors and genres. The collection includes novels, story collections, and serialized works from the 18th to early 20th centuries.
Source attribution
Every book record clearly states its source as Project Gutenberg, along with the original publisher where available. BEQRA does not modify the underlying texts; editorial content is limited to the accompanying notes and guidance.
Bibliographic records
Each entry includes the title, author(s), publication date (when known), keywords, target-reader designation, and a catalogue note. The keywords and target-reader fields are taken directly from the source metadata and are not altered for editorial purposes.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four thematic categories based on subject matter and narrative approach. These categories are intended as navigational aids, not definitive literary judgments. Some works may fit multiple categories; in such cases, the most prominent theme was chosen.
Editorial reading context
Editorial notes are written by the senior editor and are based solely on the provided excerpts from each work. They focus on observable features of the text—diction, dialogue, pacing, setting—and do not speculate about authorial intent or biographical details beyond what is evident in the catalogue information.
Edition facts and text measurements
Where available, edition notes include the original publication date and any illustrators or contributors. Text measurements such as word counts are not provided, as the full texts are hosted externally; readers are encouraged to consult the original source for complete bibliographic details.
Recommendations and related works
Each category page highlights three recommended books, chosen to illustrate the range and depth of the category. Recommendations are based on the strength of the editorial note and the work's representativeness of the category's theme. Related works are suggested through internal links within the catalogue.
Corrections and reader reports
Readers may report errors or suggest improvements via the contact page. The editorial team reviews all reports and will update the catalogue as needed. Corrections are applied to the editorial notes only; the original texts remain unchanged.
Public-domain limitations
All works in this catalogue are confirmed to be in the public domain in the United States. Readers outside the U.S. should verify the copyright status in their own jurisdiction. BEQRA cannot guarantee legal status for all territories.
